Quantum Sensing 101

Are you quantum curious? Join the Duke SPACE Initiative for Quantum 101- a conversation about quantum sensing with Professor Iman Marvian. Quantum sensing uses quantum states of atoms, photons, and engineered materials to push measurements beyond the limits of conventional sensors. This talk will introduce the basic principles behind leading quantum sensing platforms, including atomic clocks, interferometers, magnetometers, and emerging quantum imaging systems, along with examples from navigation, materials characterization, and space science. We'll also discuss where the technology is already competitive, where major technical barriers remain, and why the field has become a major focus of both research and industry. About the speaker: Iman Marvian is a theorist working on Quantum information and computation, and an Associate Professor in the departments of Physics & Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University. Lunch will be provided.
