OpenAI RFP Release and Proposal Template
Duke University’s Deep Tech Program is thrilled to announce the launch of the AI for Metascience Research Initiative, a groundbreaking collaboration with OpenAI aimed at accelerating the future of scientific discovery through the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
As part of this initiative, we are now inviting proposals from multidisciplinary teams across Duke and beyond who are interested in exploring how AI, particularly large language models like GPT, can be harnessed to drive innovation in scientific research, policy development, and ethical practice.
About the Initiative
This three-year initiative (March 2025 – January 2027) brings together researchers from the computational sciences, life sciences, health sciences, humanities, ethics, and public policy to map the transformative potential of AI in metascience. The partnership between Duke and OpenAI underscores our shared commitment to shaping the future of research through thoughtful, inclusive, and forward-looking approaches.
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking proposals that:

Map AI’s role in accelerating and predicting scientific trends

Explore the use of GPT and other models in supporting researchers and policymakers

Address ethical, policy, and technical challenges of integrating AI in scientific ecosystems

Develop public-private collaboration pilots

Contribute to a final white paper that outlines recommendations for the broader scientific community
Funding and Deliverables
Selected teams will receive up to $50,000 in funding, along with API credits as needed to support project goals. Deliverables will include research outputs, participation in formal working sessions, and contributions to a comprehensive final report to be shared publicly.
