Description

The AI and data center boom is occurring in Germany’s various environmental, political, and social landscapes, such as the phase-out of nuclear, the natural gas supply shock following the Russia-Ukraine war, difficulty attracting institutional investments, and the national energy transition. At a time when Germany is seeking to advance sustainability and energy security, while also encouraging innovation and economic growth, the national approach to AI development maps out its potential for international leadership. Such an approach is characterized by Germany playing on its strengths to create its own race in industrial AI.

Anna Keeley is a recent graduate of Duke University's Sanford School of Public Policy, where she earned her undergraduate degree in Public Policy with minors in Environmental Science and Economics. Her interests sit at the intersection of sustainability, economics, and emerging technology — exploring how policy can influence both environmental progress and economic value. This paper reflects her curiosity in the evolution of AI and responding policies, examining Germany's sustainable approach to AI development. Following graduation, she will join PwC in New York City as an Associate Consultant.
