Duke Partners with OpenAI to Launch First AI Metascience Research Program

Duke University is partnering with OpenAI to develop a roadmap for integrating AI into academic and government research to accelerate scientific discovery. As part of OpenAI’s NextGenAI consortium, which includes 15 universities such as Harvard, MIT, and Oxford, Duke will explore how AI can address specific scientific challenges and which fields will benefit most.

Duke and OpenAI are launching the first AI metascience research program, led by Sanford School professor David Hoffman and Fuqua professor Ronnie Chatterji, who is also OpenAI’s chief economist. The initiative, Deep Tech at Duke, will study AI’s impact on research productivity, economic growth, and policy, focusing on areas like semiconductors, quantum computing, climate finance, and cybersecurity.

Supported by Duke’s Office of the Provost and philanthropic funding, the program builds on the university’s history of fostering academia-industry collaboration, exemplified by its role in creating Research Triangle Park. OpenAI sees close university partnerships as essential to advancing AI for societal benefit.
